A Portuguese surgeon, merchant and missionary of the Society of Jesus in Japan. He is credited for establishing the first "western" hospital in Japan.
Biography
Luis de Almeida was a surgeon and Jesuit missionary in Japan in the Sengoku period. He was also involved with trade. According to Danny Chaplin's "Sengoku Jidai":
The jewel in the Jesuit crown was the port town of Nagasaki, which had practically been founded by the Society of Jesus. In the year 1567, the year before Nobunaga entered Kyoto, a Jesuit by the name of Luis de Almeida chanced upon a neglected fishing village and noted its potential as a deep water harbour.
